Q: Do I need a passport to cross the border?
A: Yes, and your passport can not have a expiration date less than six month from the crossing date.
Q: What are the requirements for crossing the border?
A: You should check with the Costa Rican Embassy or Consulate in your country for requirements particular to your nationality, but in general, for most nationalities, all you will need is:
1. a passport that will not expire within six months of the entry date.
2. Going INTO PANAMA, many nationalities will need to buy a tourist card at the border ($5) including North Americans, Australians and Israelis. Most of Europe does NOT need to pay. If you need to buy a tourist card, don’t worry, you can get it easily at the border when crossing and it’s only $5. Our staff will point you in the right direction.
3. Travelers are required to show “proof” that they will leave the country they are entering both Panama and Costa Rica. Proof means a recipt or ticket for an international flight or bus departing from the country being entered. (For example, a receipt for an international flight departing from Costa Rica will work as proof when you are entering Costa Rica, but it will NOT work as proof when entering Panama.) A round trip ticket with Caribe Shuttle also fullfills this requirement for the country being visited (but not on the way back). If you do not have proof when you arrive at the border, you may be required to buy an international us ticket. You can do this at the border, so don’t worry. As of Feb 2009, these tickets cost $11 when ebtering Panama and $6 when entering Costa Rica.
There are other requirements such as proof of solvency, yellow fever shots for entering Costa Rica, etc., but at the time of this writing, these are not being enforced.
Q: Can I bring my surf board?
A: Yes, maximum 9 feet, but you must reserve space for your boards when making a reservation. There is a $6 charge for each board.
