I feel badly for any of those folks who thought this system of paying for the passport run was a better deal than the more expensive option of actually going to Panama, Many new visitors have been told that the passport run has been going on for years and years. I can understand the temptation to pay to avoid the costly and tedious trip to Panama. and I sincerely hope that some leniency will be granted to them. I am heartened to see the Costa Rica government take recent actions to stop the scoff-laws and corrupt officials.

Hello, I read your translation and it has been reported on tv on many channels that people: tourists (from costa rica and other countries too) along with panamanians were in fact kidnapped from the indigenous group. Although they (indigenous) reported to the media the opposite. Unfortunately, today there was a police confrontation with the indigenous group and the strike has ceased Hopefully, there will be some peaceful agreement among both sides. All tourists along with Panamanian citizens have been reported to arrive safely to the city and later will be transported to their destination. I want to apologize for other Panamanians who do not write or express ourselves like the person above (Bocas Denuncia); I'm originally from Bocas del Toro too but believe there are other ways to express ourselves and hatred isn't one of them.

Because of comments from several people like those above, I edited this story to clarify that these allegations were made by a government official and not by the news agency itself. I also softened the term 'kidnapped' to 'detained,' as it seems that my translation of the word 'secuestrado' might have been misrepresentative. I also added a note that there was no report of violence. It seems to me that a lot of people believe the comments of the government to be propaganda. I want clarify that I am not in any way contra to the desires of the protesters, and in fact I do not pretend to understand the mining law under protest, nor the goals of the protesters. My goal here is only to warn travellers of potential problems, delays or dangers in travelling. Clearly this is not a good time to be trying to travel through the areas of protest. I assume that is the intention of protesters when they block streets, to disrupt transportation and cause mayhem in order to get the attention and action of the government. The protesters have succeeded in disrupting transportation and in causing concern to me and my clients. Their job has started well. And with this edited blog my only motivation is realized: travellers are warned of potential problems.
